The Realization of Apology Strategies: A Comparative Study between Moroccan EFL Learners and Native Speakers of English

Pragmatic competence, generally defined as the study of language in its social context, has been part and parcel learning teaching. Oftentimes, second learners tend to fall short expressing themselves spite their linguistic competence. Second pragmatic research shown that greater difference between cultures, likelihood failure among non-native speakers English. With this mind, aims at comparing similarities differences Moroccan University Learners English (MLE) Native Speakers (NSE) apology strategies order identify predict aspect use which are likely create intercultural communication breakdowns two thus contributing foreign education. Henceforth, using a discourse completion task, data was elicited from 50 MLE NSE, who responded 8 situations. Results showed most frequent strategy used for both groups is explicit Illocutionary Force Indicating Device (IFID); however, differ frequency other implicit strategies.
